Frank Ocean has quickly established himself as one of the most talented singer-songwriters of his generation. His major-label debut effortlessly transitions from Stevie-style keyboard breeziness to 90s R&B to mystic psych rock to crunching 8-bit funk. It already has the feel of a classic.
Frank Ocean is flying around, taking it all in. “Up above the birds, I saw the sky like I’d never seen before,” he says as avian chirps surround him on his major-label debut, Channel Orange. “You thought I was above you.” The 24-year-old has quickly established himself as one of the most gifted singer-songwriters of his generation; he possesses the type of voice, wit, charm, smarts, and ineffable humanity that is always hoped for, but never guaranteed. And he has every reason to believe that he is superior to the vividly realized lost souls who slouch, preen, and weep throughout his album. But that isn’t how Frank Ocean operates. His commanding gaze is strong, but not all-powerful. “What is a god to someone who doesn’t believe in anything?” He sang “No Church in the Wild” by Watch the Throne. He’s so good at questioning that answers can’t help but follow in his wake.
While Channel Orange is full of one-of-a-kind details and characters, its overall scope, like Ocean’s, is grand. Tape-hiss interludes bind these very hi-fi songs together with a musty analog quality, and a couple of tracks seem to end mid-sentence, leaving you with no choice but to continue. And there’s a timeless philosophy at work here, one of hard-won acceptance and the recognition that love, sex, and loss will always attract legends. How else to explain “Pyramids,” a 10-minute time travel from ancient Egyptian wonders to modern strip clubs in which one of history’s most storied female rulers is reincarnated as a six-inch-heeled woman of the night? Nonetheless, the song reads as a clever attempt to level the playing field rather than an indictment of the last 2,000 years.
Channel Orange carries the same spirit of confident, open-minded redefinition; he lives in his own world while also being fascinated by what’s around him. His Twitter bio currently reads, “I don’t know anything.” “You don’t either.” That is not a statement of ignorance, but rather of wisdom, in the words of Frank Ocean.
