Beyoncé’s split-personality 2xCD record follows in the footsteps of Garth Brooks’ proto-emo character Chris Gaines and T.I. vs. T.I.P.
Despite the fact that she is only 27, Beyoncé goes out of her way to be a traditional celebrity, the type who is offended by Pete Wentz blogging about Oscar the Grouch or Britney Spears tweeting her life away. “I feel that, especially now, with the Internet, paparazzi, and camera phones, it’s so difficult to maintain mystery,” she said earlier this year. “It’s almost impossible to have superstars now, because people will never get enough.” And, in our TMZ-addled world, her refusal to answer most personal questions is both refreshing and a little stubborn. In sky-high heels and a frozen smile, she’s a megawatt anachronism. So, with little outside interference, Beyoncé‘s fan-artist connection is almost entirely reliant on her music–the only place to find the “real” Beyoncé is on her albums. I Am… Sasha Fierce, a supposed window into Beyoncé’s soul as well as her hair-flipping sexpot alter ego who happens to be blessed with the ultimate “Project Runway” moniker, was created with that direct relationship in mind.
Beyoncé is a capital-S Star, and just one look at her onstage demonstrates why she’s earned the right to operate above the fray. But an album isn’t the same as a concert, and there aren’t nearly enough Sasha Fierce songs worthy of her or our attention. (However, “Smash Into You” will provide a perfect bathroom break moment on her next world tour.) While this LP is more laborious than B’Day, the extra effort dulls any emotional wallop; B’Day, in all its frantic glory, provided a much more vivid glimpse into Beyoncé‘s elusive mind than Sasha Fierce, which frequently reads more like projection than reality.Given the plethora of characters this multi-talented artist is currently amassing between movies and alter egos, the concept of Beyoncé is more splintered than ever. Sasha Fierce does not assist her in reassembling the puzzle.
