Age

Quinton De Kock was born in Johannesburg, Transvaal, South Africa, on 17 December 1992. He grew up playing baseball and dreamed of moving to the United States to play the game. However, his father convinced him to practice cricket instead. It turned out to be the course of his destiny. He attended King Edward VII School in Johannesburg, where he honed his cricket skills. Legendary cricket players Graeme Smith and Neil Mckenzie went to the same school. He was spotted as a schoolboy talent. De Kock used to play for the affiliate club Old Eds.

About his debut, he said, “Morgs wanted me to make the step up to professional cricket, and I told him if he could get me out of school, I was in.”

He also spoke about a conversation with his school headmaster. “It was a long discussion about my future, but my decision was already made up. I was offered a contract that would make any 17-year-old’s eyes water. My parents were on board, and we decided to pull the plug on school and invest everything I had in cricket. I have no regrets. Things have turned out all right.”

De Kock stated in a 2019 interview with The Cricket Monthly that he isn’t a fan of books. He said, “Me and books don’t get along. I didn’t need school or university to get where I am today. We joke in the dressing room that I might not have graduated from high school, but I have a master’s degree in cricket.”
