Gear have been a Chicago backbone throughout recent years. The threesome — containing drummer Luca Cimarusti, bass/lap steel player Michael John Grant, and guitarist/musician/performer Michael Vallera — allegedly have foundations in both commotion punk and encompassing music, the two of which come to bear on their rigidly clanking emphasis of post-punk. It will in all likelihood interest devotees of Protomartyr, Preoccupations, and individual Chicagoans FACS — or, to wander somewhat further back on schedule, ancestors like Shellac, the Jesus Lizard, and Unwound. Baggage bargain in substantial bass-fueled rhythms that downer alongside an anciently vicious manner, woven through with dissonant guitar lines and obscurely mumbled vocals. It’s the sort of music you could pound the life out of somebody with, yet in addition snap fifty-fifty over your knee.
Another Luggage record called Happiness is coming soon by means of Ryley Walker’s Husky Pants name. Walker is incredibly eager about the “moderate and peculiar” combo’s capacity to move as a unit while making a feeling of approaching fear, a range of abilities exhibited by the venture’s bleak lead single “Dread.” It’s out today in front of the full Happiness discharge in July. Tune in underneath.
